A man who is supossed to be the most wanted terrorist in Indonesia, Noordin M Top finally died today August 8, 2009. Indonesian Anti Terrorist team Densus 88 surrounded the house for 18 hours. The place is at Kedu, Temanggung, Central Java. Shooting between the team and the terrorists had killed Noordin and another person in the house.

At the same time, Densus 88 also successful to uncover a terrorist's house with 500 kilograms of bombs inside at Jatiasih, Bekasi, West Java. Two terrorists Eko Peang and Air Setiawan were killed. Police said that the bomb will be explode in the next to week at certain place. This house is used by Noordin's chain who bombed J.W Marriot and Hotel Ritz Carlton Jakarta.

Alun-alun Kidul Yogyakarta is turning into amusement park at the afternoon. This place is very ideal for parents to give entertainment for children. Children may play games here like fishing, riding train, and riding mini horses.  

It is save for children to ride the horse as the jockey guide the horse. Usually parents feed their children as they play the game. Fun situation makes children has good appetite.

Don't say that you have visited Yogyakarta if you did not watch the Ramayana Ballet. This daily show is performed at the open theater Prambanan Temple. Portraying the Ramayana epic, this colossal dance performance give certain kind of entertainment for the audiences.

Ramayana Ballet has two main characters, Rama and Shinta. Love is the main topic of the story. The love between those two characters is 'disturbed' by the antagonist character Rahwana. Rahwana, a giant with monster face, kidnapped Shinta and forces her to be his wife.

The war breaks between Rama and Rahwana. The war involves Hanuman, a monkey man, who helps Rama. Hanuman burns Rahwana's kingdom and releases Shinta.

Sukabumi is a town in West Java, which lay on the higher elevation land. The place is rich of cultural diversity, event and places that are worth to visit. Following are a few interesting places to visit.

Goa Buni Ayu
A cave formed about 600 years ago. Here, we can see beautiful stalactite and stalagmite and small river inside. Sometimes, we have to bow when follow narrow the path inside the cave. The management provides cave guide and equipment such as helmet and flashlight.

Cangkuang
It is a forest of mahogany trees in the area of Salak Mountain. Here, we enjoy the fresh air of a forest hill, beautiful view of mountain and the beauty of Dua Undak waterfall. The place provides many hotel and restaurant where the visitor may lunch or sleep. The ticket to the location is IDR 4000 (less than US$ 1).

Situ Gunung
From its name Situ = Lake and Gunung = Mountain, we’ll know it is a lake on a mountain. Getting here is not so difficult, just take small bus for only IDR 5000 from Sukabumi city. The ticket is not expensive, only IDR 6000. In this lake, we can do kayaking, fishing or just boating. Near to this lake there is a camping ground called Buper Bagedor (Bumi Perkemahan Bagedor) and Curug Sawer (Sawer Waterfall). To get to the waterfall there is an additional ticket for only IDR 2000.

The best place to stay is at Nusa Lembongan Resort. The resort has 12 villas in which 7 of them are facing the sea and the rest facing green garden. This natural architectural resort combines the comfort of staying and the simplicity of nature.

How to get there?
The island can only be reached by boat. The course will take 60 minutes from Sanur Beach or 90 minutes from Tanjung Benoa.

The beauty is not only owned by Bali, but also other place like Kepa in Alor Islands, Nusa Tenggara Timur. People may be rarely heard about it as it was hard to reach at the previous time. Today Kepa Island is more reachable, regular flights and boats are scheduled as the transportation for every traveler.

Many beautiful places at Kepa are not yet explored. Jungle, hills, hot spring water, savanna, the beauty of the under water and the local culture are the hidden diamond of Kepa. This place is the best place for fishing, canoeing, snorkeling and diving at Nusa Tenggara Timur. The natural under water worlds awaits every traveler to explore and discover the beauty.

People of Kepa live in traditional houses with roof made from straws. The traditional way in pounding rice is the daily view in the place. The road goes to Kalabahi (around 10 km, 20 min), then to Alor Kecil (another 15 km, 20/30 min) : straight to Alor Kecil by chartered bemo (~100'000/150'000 Rp), “ojek” (motorbike taxi) (30'000/50'000 Rp), or Trans Nusa car or the (only one) taxi (50 000 Rp/pers), or going to Kalabahi (~25 000 Rp/pers) by air company car, bemo or ojek.

From Kalabahi to Alor Kecil :

If we are not available, other inhabitants will probably propose to accompany you (usually ~ 5'000 or 10'000 Rp/pers)

Jogjakarta has white sand beaches that are still untouched. The beaches are located at the Bantul and Gunung kidul regency at the south of Jogjakarta.

Many of the beaches are still virgin or original, no building like hotel and resort built at the area. The beaches that have beautiful view are Baron, Kukup, Krakal, Ndrini, Wedi Amba, Jungwok, Pulutan, Dadapan and Ngobaran. Generally, the beaches have white sand except beaches at Bantul regency like Parangtritis and Pandansimo.

When visiting the beaches at Gunungkidul regency we may visit as many beach as we like as the beaches are close to each other. Sometimes, we only need to walk to visit to another beach, but sometimes we have to climb the rock or cross the strait.

Wedi Amba is one of the hidden treasures that lie at Gunungkidul regency. Wedi amba means wide sands, as we can see the beach has wide white sand. The things that are sold from this place are its virginity, view, tranquility, waves for surfing and sands for sun bathing. Buy nothing but the most distinct experience from this beach, buy the pleasure and intimacy to nature.

Wedi Amba consists of two landscapes, the beach and hill. Different to other beaches in Java Island, this beach is very possible for surfing. The high waves are the power of surfing and its shallow sea-bottom gives the savety for every surferer. The beach faces the west side so that it is possible to enjoy the sunset. The life of the sea fishes that swim between the corals can also be observed in the beach.

Unfortunately, the beach has very minimum facilities, the visitors may not find hotel or resort but living at the native’s houses is welcomed. This is the thing that the visitors won’t forget, experience the life in the villagers way, feel yourself how they sleep, eat and bathing, just interact yourself with the community.

The other facilities provided in the area are resting hut and camping ground. The wooden huts are made for the visitors to take a rest at the day. If you want to make camp here, just don’t forget to bring yourself the equipment.

How to get there?
The distance is about 70 kilometers from Jogjakarta. If use taxi it will cost about Rp.200.000 to 300.000. Use bus to Wonosari and then take bus to the beach or rent a car for about Rp. 150.000 per day.

We are very often feeling bored of everyday menu served at the restaurant. We need something new or something adventurous. When in the restaurant, the food may be has the same taste to the meals that are served at home.

Indonesia has culinary richness, good cuisines are not only can be found at the café and restaurant but also at the street. The street restaurants can be found in almost every city in Indonesia, from Jakarta to Papua. The street restaurants are commonly called tent café or lesehan (cross legged/no chair available). The street restaurant means the food kiosk that is built (not permanently) at the side of the street. Tent is used for the roof and the wall.

The street cafés serve various menus such as bakso, sea food, Chinese food, Javanese Food like gudeg, pecel lele, java bakmi, and other food like setae, fried or toasted chicken and nasi goreng (fried rice). Generally, this kind of restaurant opens at 15.00 p.m. and will be closed at 1 or 2 a.m.

It is very easy to find bakso in Java Island. Bakso is something like soup with noodle, fried tofu, vegetable and the most important is the bakso (ball shaped meat). The good bakso is made form pure meat (bigger meat proportion and smaller flour proportion). This can be seen from the color and the texture, the darker the color the better the quality.

Java noodle or bakmi jawa is commonly can be found at Jogjakarta, Solo and at certain place in Jakarta. The cuisine is made from noodle with chicken, duck’s or chicken’s egg and of course special ingredient. This bakmi can be served in two ways, boiled and fried. Bakmi Jawa has different taste from any other cuisine from outside Java. The most famous bakmi is Bakmi Kadin in Jogjakarta. It is located at Bintaran Street, about half kilometers to the east from Kraton or Sultan’s Palace.

When we talk about the price, the street restaurant has lower price then the other restaurant, for example the price for bakso is starting from Rp. 4.500,00, for bakmi Jawa is starting from Rp. 5000,00 and Rp. 1.500,00 for the drink such as tea or orange. Lower price doesn’t mean lower quality, many of them have good taste and quality so that it can be a solution for the backpackers.

Tips

Ask the price to the seller before ordering the food. This is very important because some naughty sellers will request more money from the regular price.
Bring cash. Credit card service is not available.
The more the visitor, the better the taste and price.

Tamansari, The Sultan’s Place for Relax

When visiting Kraton Jogjakarta we would better to take a walk to observe the historical places around. At the surrounding, some places can be visited such as Kereta Museum (Museum of Sultan’s Horse Wagon), Ngasem Bird Market and Tamansari. A cultural heritage in Jogjakarta, a place which has relation with Kraton or the Sutan’s Palace is Tamansari Water Castle. This place is located 400 meters of the south of Kraton Jogjakarta.

Tamansari was built in the 17th century, when Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono I had power over the kingdom. The work was then completed by Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono II. The Portugal’s architectural building was aimed to be the place for Sultan to relax, meditated, and as the family’s place for recreation.

When we come in from the west entrance, we will meet a gate and a terrace upon it. The terrace is used as a balcony, a place for Sultan to watch the dance performed by beautiful Kraton’s dancers. If we enter the gate, we will meet Gedong Papat (four buildings placed on the right and left of the pathway). The buildings are the places for the Wiyaga (traditional musician) who play gamelan (traditional Javanese group of musical instruments).

Deeper enter to Tamansari, we will come to another gate which connect the previous place with the pool. We have to enter the gate which has a descend pathway. The pool has lower elevation to other part of the Tamansari. The pool is called Umbulbinangun. Umbulbinangun has 3 pools. The first is the north pool for children, the center pool for the ladies and the south pool is the pool for the Sultan. The center and south pool is divided by a 3 stairs building for the Sultan to observe the ladies. When Sultan finds a lady he likes, he will throw a flower to the lady and she permitted to join in the Sultan’s pool.

At the north of Tamansari, there are several important places. The first is Pulo Panembung. The building is used for meditation. The meditation itself is done in the room, 10 meters below the ground.

The second place is Pulo Cemeti or Pulo Kenanga. Pulo Kenanga is a high structure for Putri (Kraton’s Ladies). The building is surrounded by water when the water channel is opened. People say if the building will look like a water lily if it is seen from the air.

The other place is Sumur Gumuling. This place is like a well where the place is used for shollat or prays for Muslim. The place is connected with an underground pathway which is also believed connect the place with Kraton. The legend says if the underground pathway connects also to the south sea, where Nyai Roro Kidul (a spirit who believed as every Sultan’s wife) lives, and it becomes the way for Sultan to meet her.

Inside the Tamansari, there is a village called Kampung Taman. Here, we may find Batik (hand painting cloth) for souvenir. Not only we can purchase batik but also we may to try to paint on the cloth. There are batik courses available at the village.

How to get to the place?

To visit Jogjakarta from Jakarta or Bali we may take domestic flight which scheduled very often and it will take about 45 minutes. From the Adisucipto Airport, take Taxi to Kraton or find Hotel in Malioboro Street (there are plenty of stars hotels and non stars hotels. We may also take train from Jakarta to Tugu or Jogjakarta (the same) Railway Station. From the station take a walk across the railway to the Malioboro Street at the south of the station to find hotels. If you stay at Malioboro Street hotels, just take a walk to the south, it is about a half kilometers or take becak (three cycled vehicle) to Tamansari or Kraton.

Sultan’s Cuisine at Gadri Resto

The King of Jogjakarta or commonly called the Sultan has secret cuisine which can not be find anywhere. The restaurant that holds the secret recipe is only at Gadri Resto Jogjakarta. The place is located at JL. Rotowijayan no.5 Kraton, Yogyakarta, near the west gate of Kraton Jogjakarta.

When the tourists are already observe the historical places at the Kraton surrounding like Museum Kereta (Sultan’s Horse Wagon Museum), Ngasem Bird Market and Tamansari, it is the time to satisfy the tongue with the historical tasted cuisine. Why it is historical tasted cuisine? The answer is that the recipes are the heritage of the Sultans. The foods are what the Sultans love to eat. The recipes are only known by the close relative of Sultan.

The building of Gadri Resto was built on 1917 and it is now owned by KGBPH Joyokusumo, a relative of Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X. The resto is decorated in the Javanese classic style. Joglo, the original shape of Javanese roof is the identity of the restaurant. The photographs of the Sultans hanged on the wall and bring the more classic feeling.

The Resto serves traditional cuisines such as nasi blawong (blawong rice) that is accompanied by daging lombok kethok (chili beef), ayam goreng laos (galingale fried chicken), telor pindang goreng (fried pindang egg), the other menus are sate sanggar, pudding manuk nom, perawan kenes (steamed kepok banana which is tied with pandanus leaf and clipped with bamboo stick) and jave beer. Those simple and traditional cuisines give unique experience for our tongue as it can only be enjoyed at the resto.

Blawong rice which is the favorite of Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono VIII, is the most secret recipe, as nobody knows the formula. The ingredient’s formula is delivered directly from inside kraton, and then the resto mixes it with the rice.

Sate (setae) sanggar is made from beef that is boiled in the ingredient before toasted on the charcoal. The beef is clipped with bamboo sticks before baked. The good taste of the ingredients and the soft of the beef give more satisfaction for the tongue.

Cibodas Moss Garden, the One and Only

The most unique garden in Indonesia and even in this world, that worth to be visited is moss garden. The location of this garden is in Cibodas Botanical Garden on the slope of Gede Pangrango Mountain at Cimacan village, Pacet, Cianjur, West Java. The elevation of the garden is 1275 meters above sea level and the temperature is 17 – 27 Celsius.

Moss for many people is considered as a useless plant and has to be removed. Actually, this kind of plant is not useless, it can be useful as well. Some people in Indonesia, traditionally uses it to be medicine for diarrhea, hepatitis, skin and eye problem. The other useful role of moss or bryophyte is keeping the soil’s humidity, produce oxygen and absorb air pollutants.

Being part of the Cibodas Botanical Garden, this moss garden is the only outdoor bryophyte garden in the world and it has the most collection of moss species. The moss garden is built for the purpose of education, conservation and tourism. For now on it has more than 216 species of moss such as Polythrichum, spagnum, Usnea, Marchantia, etc. The mosses are collected from the Indonesian forests such as from Cibodas itself, Sumatra and Kalimantan.

The garden is designed specially to be the place for moss or bryophyte can be grown. Some areas are wet, shaded or exposed and some mosses are attached to the trees or wood. The landscape is also built artistically just like the miniature of Gede Pangrango mountain, the map of the Botanical garden, valley, river, waterfall and the miniature of tropical rain forest. The moss also covered the trees and it branches so we might imagine that we are in the very old jungle. The field is built to give a very interesting view that a lot of us are rarely seeing such view. As the garden is built in the botanical garden which has many collection of trees such as pine, pinophyta or coniferae, etc., has fressh air and cold temperature it made the feeling that we travel to the deep of a jungle.

The moss garden in Cibodas Botanical Garden is not the only place that can be visited. It has other interesting places such as waterfall, flower garden, Bandung Asri Mulya golf field and camping ground and we can do forest tour,. The camping ground can occupy for 200 tents and facilitated with public toilets.

The garden is near to Jakarta and Bandung. From Jakarta or Bandung, take the bus to Puncak, Cianjur, take a stop at Cibodas t-junction (if you’re from Jakarta, it is after Puncak), take a Cipanas-Rarahan bus and take a stop at Balai Taman Nasional Gede-Pangrango, take a walk to the garden. Tunggulwulung Parade, a Cultural Festival in Jogjakarta

Indonesia is rich of ethnic groups in which cultures are live and grow for years. One of the cultural festivals in Indonesia is held in Jogjakarta, a province in the Java Island. Jogjakarta itself has so many rituals in which the religions and faith that exist have very strong relation to the ceremony or festival. One of the cultural events or ceremonies is Tunggulwulung Parade.

Tunggulwulung Parade is usually held on August or September after the celebration of Indonesia’s Independence Day on 17th of August. The parade is held for only one day. The start of the parade takes place at Godean, a city about 15 kilometers to the west of Jogjakarta, and will march for about 10 kilometers to the west and it will end at Minggir village.

The Tunggulwulung Parade is held to celebrate the Independence Day, to express great thanks to the God and to show an ancient javelin called Kiai Tunggul Kebo. The tomb is about 200 or more years old. Some people believe that the javelin has supernatural power or there are spirits live in it.

The Parade is illustrating the Jogjakarta in the past, when the Sultan of Jogjakarta ruled the Mataram kingdom. Every participant of the parade should wear their custom uniform. The amount of participant is usually more than 1000 people. The most participant is representing the Sultan’s soldier and many of them are in fact Sultan’s soldier. Not only are the participants representing Javanese culture and ethnic but also other culture and ethnic such as Dayak (an ethnic in the Borneo/Kalimantan Island), Balinese, etc. The participants are grouped in several categories such as soldier (prajurit), musicians, civilians, other ethnic groups.

The ritual behind the Parade

Before the parade starts, there will be a ritual or a prayer. The ritual is asking for the God to give prosperity, health, good brotherhood among the people and to show gratitude on the grace. To express the gratitude, three buffalos’ head are sacrificed. The head of the buffalos are then will be sunk at Progo River in Minggir village. The other things to be presented as the symbol of gratitude are gunungan (fruits and vegetables arranged like pyramid) and traditional foods. The gunungan and the foods are then given to all visitors and the parade is ended by performing one night shadow puppet (wayang kulit) show at Minggir village.

The parade or carnival is not merely give unique target for the photograph or showing the cultural richness but it also has deeper meaning for the people in communicating with the God.

The event is free and there won’t be ticket to be bought except the cost for the bus. From the city of Jogja we can take a bus that will cost about Rp. 5.000,00 or a taxi that will cost Rp. 50.000,00. If you are able to ride a motorcycle it is better to rent one for only Rp. 50.000 – Rp. 75.000,00 per day.

SIBERUT NATIONAL PARK

Siberut National Park is located on Siberut Island near to West Sumatra that is separated by Mentawai Sea. The distance from Padang, the capital of West Sumatra, is about 155 kilometers. 60% of Siberut is covered by natural forest which has beautiful view and huge amount of fauna. The UNESCO states it as a biosphere conservatory through the program Man and the Biosphere.

Distinctly, Siberut has its original primate species that can not be found in other place in this world. The Siberut’s original primates are bokkoi (Macaca pagensis), lutung mentawai/joja (Presbytis potenziani siberu), bilou (Hylobates klossii), and simakobu (Nasalis concolor siberu). In addition to that species, Siberut National Park also has 4 species of chipmunks, 17 mammals and 130 species of birds which 4 of them are Siberut original species.

The tribe that occupies the Siberut Island is Mentawai tribe. They live in social closeness and tight brotherhood. They live in a huge house called UMA, it may consist of 30 to 80 peoples. The Mentawai undergoes traditional live, they are away from modern life and their faith is animism.

The travel to Siberut National Park is a really challenging adventure. To explore the park we have to mud walking, boating and kayaking. The traveler are able to enjoy the view, swimming in the water that is falling from the virgin waterfall at the northern and southern of the island, observe the flora, photograph the scene, flora and fauna, caving and observing the traditional community.

Not only the tourists can do the above activities but they are also able to snorkel at Sagulubek Beach and Masilok Beach. The beaches offer their virgin habitats such as coral and fishes that are very interesting. The white sand coast with the tropical coconut trees create the most beautifull view. The accomodations are available at the beach, so relax yourself and enjoy the view.

To complete the visit, every May is held Gandang Tasa festival and Tabuik Festival on June. Those two festivals are held in Padang.

The travel to the park is arranged by travel agents in Padang or Bukit Tinggi. They provide all the need to make the journey as well as the guides.

The Siberut National Park can be achieved by boat from Muara Padang at Padang to Muara Siberut or Muara Sikabaluan or Muara Saibi. The schedule of the boat is 3 times a week, on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday and it departs at 8 P.M. The journey takes places for 10 hours. On demand boat may be arranged with the travel agents at Padang.

The unique tradition to bury children who die before their teeth was grown. Commonly the dead people are buried at the ground or burned, but in Toraja, they bury the body in the tree. The tree that is used is Tara tree. Many bodies may be buried at a tree as it may consist of 10 bodies or more.

The Toraja people believe that the spirit of the dead children will always live and they unite with the spirit of the tree. They bury the dead children with certain body position, the dead body should not be placed facing their home. The reason of the position is that they believe the spirit will bother the family if the body is facing their house.

The position of the grave is based on their caste, the higher class will be placed at the higher part of the three, and the lower class will be placed at the lower of the tree. The red circle at the potograph shows the position of the grave.

Have you heard Bingin beach? What is the special of Bingin beach? What can we enjoy there?

The Bingin beach is a beach at Pecatu village near Kuta beach in Bali. The beach is less famous than Kuta or Sanur beach, but it is not less beautiful than 2 mentioned beaches. Comparing to Kuta beach, Bingin has better view, the beach lies beneath a hill and it has white sands, blue water and rocks. The beach also has small waves and shallow water, so that every child may swim at this beach.
